My maternal grandfather was a veteran of both WWI (US Army) and WWII (USMC).
During WWI he was sickened by influenza twice during his time in France, which I learned about through his letters to my grandmother. He returned home, raised four daughters one of which was my mother.
He was an incredibly resilient man who demonstrated courage and patriotism on a daily basis and I cherished the times I spent with him as I grew into adulthood.
Just prior to my departure for Vietnam we enjoyed a beer together just talking the afternoon away. He never talked about what he witnessed through two wars and I have never talked about my experiences. We both probably should have.
